We know that many students who apply to Augustana College also apply to a public university. They are drawn to Augustana, yet they might think the university costs less or has more to offer.

These are common perceptions, but let’s take a closer look at what Augustana College can offer:

  • Investment in students: The private college funding model and loyal alumni can be tailored to financially support individual students based on who they are and what they do. Net costs at a small private college can be comparable to or even less than at the university.
  • Life outside class: The small college’s residential campus offers opportunities for students to participate in and lead student organizations. Further, Augustana’s 2,600 students have access to high-impact experiences outside class such as study abroad, internships and research with professors.
  • One-on-one focus: With a student-faculty ratio of 12-to-1 and average class size of 18, students have their professors’ attention. Close advising begins on day 1, and the mentoring continues through professional connections and friendships post-graduation.

At Augustana, we are proud that:

  • 65% of our recent graduates studied abroad;
  • more than a third are involved in varsity athletics;
  • about a quarter are involved in performing arts ensembles;
  • 90% complete an internship, significant research project, or hands-on learning experience;
  • and 95% of recent graduates who applied to graduate school were accepted into their first or second choice of programs.

Students truly are the focus at Augustana, where they become deeply engaged in learning and life on campus. Before dismissing a private college as too small, spend some time thinking about what you want out of your higher-education experience. Compare the numbers, not just student population, and then choose the school that can offer you more, and for less than you might expect.
