Hofstra University is a 4-year research institution and the largest private university on Long Island. Hofstra is home to 12 colleges and schools offering undergraduate degrees in over 160 fields of study. In addition to classroom facilities, the institution is also home to the Hofstra University Museum of Art. For students interested in politics and current events, Hofstra is the only university to host US presidential debates in three consecutive election cycles.

To learn more about Hofstra and whether it’s the right college for you, we sat down with Claire Fitzgibbon, the Director of Undergraduate Admissions, to answer some questions!

What makes your institution stand out from others students may be considering?

Although we are a mid-size school, most of our classes are small. Our professors can get a feel for how each student learns best and include more discussions, hands-on activities, and projects in their classes.

What support services or diversity initiatives do you offer to first-gen, low income, and/or underrepresented students?

NOAH: The New Opportunities at Hofstra Program (NOAH) has provided highly motivated and diverse students with access to higher education at one of the country’s finest postsecondary institutions since the program’s inception in 1964. Today, the NOAH Program provides academic, financial and social support resources for students from lower-socioeconomic backgrounds who attend Hofstra University.

Student Access Services: Helps students with the registration process, and then will work with students to determine which accommodations are appropriate for their needs. In addition to arranging accommodations, a major part of the mission of SAS is to help students develop the skills they will need to be effective self-advocates at Hofstra and beyond. Our programs and services will encourage active involvement from students in managing their own disabilities, while offering coaching and support along the way.

PALS Program: Serves students with specific learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD, each student is paired up to meet individually with an experienced learning specialist.
