When a college admissions counselor visits your high school, it’s a great opportunity to make a first impression on a college you are interested in. Here are some tips for how to ace a visit from a college admissions officer.

Come prepared. Research the college the admissions counselor is here to talk about. You should be able to articulate why you are interested in this college. Look into the program you are interested in and some extracurricular activities you might like to join.

Make a good first impression. This counselor could be the first person to read your college application. Since you have the opportunity to have a face-to-face conversation with this person, you should make a lasting impression. Make sure you are dressed professionally for this conversation. Give a firm handshake and make eye contact.

Have an engaging conversation. The best way to show your interest is to ask the admissions counselor questions. Ask specific and thoughtful questions. It is just as important to listen to the answer. This likely will not be a formal interview but more of just a conversation.

Fill out the information card. Some admissions counselors will give you the option to fill out an information or response card during this visit. It’s important that you fill these out. These cards help counselors to keep track of students they’ve talked with and remind the counselors of students with demonstrated interest in their college.

Follow up. If you can, get the admissions counselor’s business card. After this visit, send a follow-up email or card. Thank them for their time and reiterate why you are interested in the college. This will set you apart from other applicants and help the admissions counselor to remember your name.
