15 Local Scholarships for Chicago Area Students

Chicago Scholarships

These scholarships are perfect for students who live in the Chicago metro area of the great state of Illinois. And because they are only for students from in and around Chicago, levels of competition are lower than most nationwide scholarship opportunities. The scholarships are listed chronologically, and include links to additional information about each opportunity on College Greenlight.

 

Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois 

Deadline: December 1

Award: $5,000

This program is for Illinois high school seniors graduating in 2015 who are interested in a teaching career. To qualify, students must complete the written nomination online, provide proof of ACT scores, and submit school transcripts. Students may nominate themselves, or teachers and counselors can nominate an outstanding young person.

Illinois Conservation Foundation’s Conservation Achievement Scholarship

Deadline: January 15

Award: $2,000

This scholarship is for Illinois high school seniors who have demonstrated effective, voluntary, long-term dedication to the preservation, protection, enhancement and/or promotion of Illinois’ natural resources.

Phi Beta Kappa Chicagoland Area Scholarship 

Deadline: February 1

Award: $5,000

This scholarship is for outstanding graduates from the Chicago Public Schools in Illinois, for continuation of their education in college. One student from each CPS high school will be considered for the scholarship provided they are able to meet the requirements.

Community Bankers Association of Illinois Annual Essay Scholarship Program

Deadline: February 4

Award: $1,000

This scholarship is for Illinois high school seniors. Applicants must be sponsored by a CBAI member bank (visit the website to locate a bank near you). To apply, applicants must submit an essay on a given topic.

Zeta Phi Beta Diamond Dove Achievement Award

Deadline: February 7

Award: $1,000

This scholarship is for African American women who reside in Illinois. To qualify, applicants must be graduating high school seniors who are pursuing a full-time undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university and have a 3.0 GPA. Awards are given to students who demonstrate the four principles of: Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood.

Fiesta del Sol Guadalupe A. Reyes Scholarship

Deadline: February 27

Award: $1,500

This scholarship is for Hispanic/Latino students who meet the following criteria: live on the Southwest side of Chicago between 16th to 79th streets and between Cicero Avenue (4800 West) and Canal (500 West); or volunteer at Pilsen Neighbors Community Council; or are a member of the Pilsen Neighbors Community Council.

Wentcher Foundation Scholarships 

Deadline: March 1

Award: $7,500

This scholarship is for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school seniors. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and be accepted to an accredited four-year college or university in the United States. Scholarships will be awarded based on talent, need, and character.

Department of Children & Family Services Youth in Scholarship 

Deadline: March 31

Award: $491/month for up to 4 years

This scholarship is for DCFS youth and youth who were formerly in the care of DCFS. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be at least 16 years old but not yet 21 on the application deadline date.

AKA Imani Pearls Community Development Foundation Scholarship

Deadline: April 24

Award: Varies

This scholarship is for African American high school seniors who reside and attend school in the Englewood, Bronzeville, Oakland, Kenwood, Hyde Park, Grand Boulevard, or Washington Park communities in Chicago, Illinois. To qualify, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and be able to provide proof of 50 or more hours of community service.

QBG Foundation College Scholarship

Deadline: April 30

Award: $10,000

This scholarship is for motivated, college-bound seniors who reside in the greater Chicagoland area in Illinois. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must possess a cumulative 3.0 GPA or better, be accepted to an accredited four-year college or university (preference will be given to a Historically Black College or University or HBCU), and demonstrate financial need.

Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education Scholarship 

Deadline: May 1

Award: $1,000

This scholarship is for Latino/a high school seniors and college undergraduate students in Illinois, who exhibit outstanding commitment to learning, community service, and leadership.

Aurelio “Larry” Jazo Migrant Scholarship

Deadline: May 15

Award: $1,000

This scholarship is for migrant farm worker students who have a recent history of migration to Illinois for agricultural employment. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need and scholastic achievement.

Edward and Shirley Calahan Scholarship

Deadline: June 15

Award: $2,000

This scholarship is for Chicago high school seniors who have demonstrated excellence in education and a financial need. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must have maintained a 3.0 GPA during their senior year and have proof of acceptance into a university, college, or higher level trade school.

CPS Dream Fund Scholarship

Deadline: June 1

Award: Varies

This scholarship is for seniors attending Chicago Public Schools in Chicago, Illinois. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must be DREAMers (non-U.S. citizen or permanent resident high school student who qualifies for in-state college tuition under the Illinois’ HB-60 State Legislation and who will benefit from the Illinois DREAM Act) recommended by a principal, counselor, or college/career coach. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (weighted) and a minimum ACT score of 17. This is a a talent- and need-based, last-dollar scholarship. See application for further details.

Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Scholarship

Deadline: June 8

Award: $3,000

This scholarship is for residents of the City of Chicago who are enrolled full-time at a tuition-based Illinois institution of higher education or vocational training school. To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must demonstrate significant financial need and provide proof of income for 3 months (13 weeks).
