How to Pick a College Major

0 Comments 26 October 2017

Here are some tips on how to pick the right major in college. It’s never too early to start thinking about your potential major, even if you’re in your first years of high school.

What are you passionate about? Your college major leads you to your career. You don’t want to spend your professional life doing something you don’t like. Take some time to explore your passions. Just make sure it is important enough to become more than a hobby. If you can’t decide what your passion is by your freshman year – that’s okay. Many students go into college undecided and declare a major sophomore year.

Can it get you a job? It is important to consider if a major can help land you a job after college. Some majors are more marketable than others. If you are passionate about a field of study that you don’t think will be able to land you job, consider minoring in it. This option would give you the best of both worlds by allowing you to study something you love, along with something that can get you a job.

Will it require another degree? Some majors require an extra degree in order to land a good job. Take this into account before you settle on a major. Talk to an advisor at your college if you are unsure if a major you are interested in would require extra schooling.

If you have absolutely no idea where to begin, take a look at this list of majors to learn more about programs that may potentially interest you.
