We are always impressed by organizations who care deeply about the issues and challenges that underrepresented students face. One of the most impressive examples we’ve seen is Power Poetry, a community of poets who use the internet to help students from different backgrounds tell their stories.

Power Poetry was founded in April 2012 with a profound mission.

“If you don’t learn to write your own life story, someone else will write it for you.”

Their founding staff members and poets knew that young people all across the country were experiencing thousands of stories every day, but that too often these stories were being ignored, silenced, or forgotten. They built a website where these young students and artists could publicly share their poetry and be inspired by the poems of others. By the end of 2012, Power Poetry grew to over 10,000 poets who shared their poetry and their stories. Now, they have over 75,000 poets.

As a College Greenlight student, we know you have a story to tell. We think Power Poetry is a great place to show the world who you are, what you stand for, and where you’re going. They host regular Scholarship Slams for college-bound and college-going students to use their poetry to compete for scholarships. They also have an incredible mentor writing program¬†where students can submit their poetry and writing to experts who can give them meaningful feedback.

And the poetry that students share on Power Poetry is incredible.

If you find yourself inspired by these poems, then you should join the conversation over at Power Poetry. And if you’re thinking about majoring in literature, English, or creative writing, practicing your skills with Power Poetry will help you immerse yourself in language in college.

We can’t wait to read the poems you create!
